Conditions
You need a written acceptance from a Vietnamese school or educational institution; the Law makes it a condition for any visa to study. The DH symbol covers both study and internships. The institution, as a legal entity in Vietnam, files the visa request with the Immigration Department after notifying it once of its establishment documents and seal.
Visa and arrival
The Immigration Department replies to the school within five working days and informs the Vietnamese mission or border gate. You submit your passport, form and photo; the embassy issues the visa within three working days of the notice. After arrival your accommodation, often a student residence, registers your temporary residence with the local police.
- Obtain an admission or internship acceptance letter from the Vietnamese institution.
- The institution files the DH visa request with the Immigration Department.
- After approval, apply at the Vietnamese embassy or consulate or the gate named in the approval and pay the visa fee.
- Enter Vietnam and make sure your accommodation declares your temporary residence.
- Ask the school to apply for your DH temporary residence card; collect it after five working days.
DH temporary residence card
DH visa holders can be considered for a DH temporary residence card with the same symbol. The school submits its request, your declaration form with photo, your passport and proof of enrolment at the immigration office where it is based; the decision takes five working days. The card is valid for up to five years and cannot extend beyond 30 days before your passport's expiry. With a card you can leave and re-enter Vietnam without a visa.
Work and family
Studying in Vietnam does not automatically include a right to work. The Immigration Department lists one exception: people studying under international treaties or agreements may combine study with work if the school gives written permission. Your spouse and children under 18 can come on TT visas and, with the school's agreement, stay with you for the term of your card.

Frequently asked questions
Can I study in Vietnam on an e-visa?
The Law requires an acceptance letter from a Vietnamese school for study. A short course of a few weeks may fit within an e-visa, but enrolled students use the DH visa and card.
How long is a student residence card valid?
Up to five years, but always at least 30 days shorter than the remaining validity of your passport.
Is an internship covered by the DH visa?
Yes. The Law defines DH as the visa for people entering for internships and study.
Can I work part-time as a student?
Only in the case listed by the Immigration Department: students under international treaties or agreements with written permission from the school.
