Who can apply

Since 15 August 2023 the Government has opened the e-visa to citizens of all countries and territories (Resolution 127/NQ-CP). You must be outside Vietnam when you apply, hold a valid passport and not fall under the entry bans in Article 21 of the Law (for example forged documents, a deportation within the last three years or a dangerous infectious disease).

Official guests and staff of diplomatic missions and international organisations (Article 8, clauses 1 to 4 of the Law) cannot use the portal; their visas are requested through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you broke Vietnamese law on an earlier visit, the portal warns that your application may be refused.

Photo and passport scan

The portal reads your data from two uploads. The portrait must be a recent 4 x 6 cm image in JPG or JPEG format under 2 MB, facing the camera, without hat or glasses, in formal clothes and on a white background. The passport scan shows only the data page, sharp and with no corners cut off; the system checks the machine-readable zone and compares the faces.

Enter your name exactly as on the ICAO line of the passport in capital letters. The passport must remain valid at least 30 days beyond the e-visa. Children under 14 who are entered in a parent's passport can be added to the same application; a child with its own passport needs a separate e-visa.

Fee and payment

The fee follows the national fee table (Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC): USD 25 for a single-entry visa and USD 50 for a multiple-entry visa valid up to 90 days. It is paid by card through the portal's payment gateway when you submit and is not refunded if the e-visa is refused. Unofficial websites that resemble the portal often add their own service charges.

Applying and checking the result

Choose the option for foreigners applying in person on evisa.gov.vn, upload the photo and passport page, check the data the system extracts and complete the remaining fields: intended entry and exit dates, entry and exit gates, purpose, address in Vietnam and contact person. Note the e-visa application number. You can look up the status and download the e-visa with that number, your e-mail address and date of birth. Vietnamese companies can also apply on a foreigner's behalf through an organisation account.

  1. Open evisa.gov.vn (or thithucdientu.gov.vn) and choose the option for foreigners outside Vietnam applying personally.
  2. Upload the portrait and the passport data page; check the details read automatically from the passport.
  3. Fill in the trip details: single or multiple entry, validity dates, entry and exit gates, purpose and address in Vietnam.
  4. Confirm the declaration and pay USD 25 or USD 50 through the payment gateway; write down the e-visa application number.
  5. After about three working days search the status with the application number, e-mail and date of birth, and download the e-visa.
  6. Print the e-visa, check that names and dates match your passport, and enter through one of the designated gates.

Entry gates and stay

E-visa holders must enter and leave through one of the 42 international border gates designated by the Government: 13 airports (Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc, Cat Bi, Can Tho, Phu Bai, Van Don, Tho Xuan, Dong Hoi, Phu Cat, Lien Khuong), 16 land gates such as Moc Bai, Lao Bao and Huu Nghi, and 13 seaports. Your accommodation declares your temporary residence to the local police. If a Vietnamese organisation or relative later invites you, you may be considered for a new visa without leaving the country.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for the e-visa while I am in Vietnam?

No. The e-visa is only for foreigners who are currently abroad. Inside Vietnam a new visa or an extension is requested through a sponsor.

Is the fee refunded if my e-visa is refused?

No. The portal states that the fee is not refunded when the e-visa is not granted.

Can I enter at a gate other than the one I chose?

You must use one of the 42 border gates on the Government's e-visa list. Gates outside that list do not accept e-visas.

Can I work on an e-visa?

No. Foreigners who come to work need a work permit or an exemption certificate under the Labour Code and the corresponding visa.

How long must my passport be valid?

The passport must stay valid at least 30 days longer than the e-visa you request.
