Who qualifies for TT

TT stands for the dependants' visa. It is issued to the spouse and children under 18 of foreigners who hold LV1, LV2, ĐT, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1 or LĐ visas, and to foreigners who are the father, mother, spouse or child of a Vietnamese citizen. The dependants of DN or VR visa holders are not included. From July 2026 the spouse and children of UĐ1 holders use the separate UĐ2 symbol.

Visa exemption certificate for families of Vietnamese citizens

The Law allows overseas Vietnamese holding foreign passports, and foreigners who are the spouse or child of a Vietnamese citizen or of an overseas Vietnamese, to be exempted from visas under Government rules. The exemption is granted as a separate certificate (giấy miễn thị thực); issuing or re-issuing it costs USD 10. It suits couples who travel back and forth rather than living permanently in Vietnam.

Fees

Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC: TT visa USD 25 single entry or USD 50, 95 or 135 multiple entry depending on validity up to one year; visa for a child under 14 USD 25; temporary residence card USD 145 up to two years and USD 155 for two to five years; visa exemption certificate USD 10.

Visa, card and sponsorship

A Vietnamese spouse, or the organisation that sponsors the foreign worker, investor or student, files the TT visa request with the Immigration Department, which replies within five working days. After arrival the same sponsor can apply for a TT temporary residence card: its request, your declaration form with photo, your passport and proof of the relationship, decided within five working days. TT cards are valid for up to three years. For dependants of foreign residents, the sponsoring organisation must agree to the family living in Vietnam during the card's term.

  1. Check which basis applies: spouse/child of a Vietnamese citizen, or dependant of a foreign LĐ, ĐT, DH or similar holder.
  2. Prepare the marriage or birth certificate; from 11 September 2026, when the Apostille Convention entered into force for Vietnam, an apostille replaces consular legalisation for documents from other contracting states.
  3. The sponsor files the TT visa request with the Immigration Department.
  4. Collect the visa at the Vietnamese embassy or consulate or the border gate named in the approval and travel to Vietnam.
  5. The sponsor applies for your TT temporary residence card; collect it after five working days.

Work and long-term status

A TT card is a residence permit, not a work authorisation. The Government has confirmed that a foreign worker married to a Vietnamese permanent resident can hold a TT card sponsored by the spouse and work once a work permit has been issued; applying for a separate LĐ card is then not mandatory. After three years of continuous temporary residence, a foreigner sponsored by a Vietnamese parent, spouse or child residing in Vietnam may apply for permanent residence if they have lawful accommodation and stable income.
