Uganda student visa and student pass
Student pass (with entry on a visa in the studies category)
In short
Foreign students in Uganda need a student pass, which NCIC grants to learners over 4 years old enrolled at a Ugandan institution, for 3, 6 or 12 months. The fee is a flat USD 100 whatever the period, and East African nationals are exempt from it. Students who need a visa usually first enter on a single-entry visa in its studies category, with the school's invitation and admission letters.

Who needs a student pass
The student pass is for foreign nationals older than 4 who are enrolled in a learning institution in Uganda, from primary school pupils to university students. It is granted for 3, 6 or 12 months. Holders of a student pass can sponsor dependants, as NCIC lists the student pass among the statuses that qualify a principal for a dependant pass.
Students who are not visa-exempt need a visa to enter. The single-entry visa form has a studies category for this: you upload the school's invitation letter, the admission letter, a photo, the passport page and information on your host's status in Uganda, then convert to a student pass once you are enrolled.
Documents for the student pass
NCIC asks for a valid student ID card, the passport bio-data page with at least six months of validity, a recent photo, a support letter from the school, the admission letter, proof that tuition fees have been paid and your current immigration status, such as the entry visa or an earlier pass. For a student under 18, add the immigration status and identification of the parent or guardian.
NCIC's entry permit checklist also mentions a letter addressed to the Secretary of Citizenship and Immigration Control, the sponsor's bank statement and a letter of good conduct from the home country or Interpol, so have these ready in case the officer asks for them.

Fee
The student pass costs USD 100, payable when you apply. It is a standard fee, the same for 3, 6 or 12 months, so a 12-month pass is the better value when the course allows it. East African nationals are exempt from the fee but still need the pass. Online card payments carry NCIC's 3% surcharge, and the entry visa in the studies category is a separate USD 50.
Application steps
Log in to the portal, start a new application, select Permit, then the student pass, and fill in the form. Upload the documents; the system generates an application ID. Pay the fee, wait for the emailed approval and then report to the immigration office with your passport, the uploaded documents, payment receipts and the approval letter for biometric capture and issuance of the pass.
- Secure admission at a Ugandan institution and obtain the invitation and admission letters.
- Apply online for a single-entry visa in the studies category and travel to Uganda.
- Enrol, pay tuition and get your student ID and the school's support letter.
- Apply for the student pass on the portal and pay USD 100.
- After approval, attend the immigration office for biometrics and collect the pass.
Renewing the pass
A pass obtained through the online system is renewed through 'Extend your application' on the portal, using the original application ID, passport number and date of birth. Apply before the current pass ends: NCIC's inspection department can prosecute or remove foreign nationals whose stay is unlawful, and all dependants of foreign nationals must hold their own immigration facility.
