How visas for Togo work
Togo issues all its visas online through the official Togo Voyage platform (voyage.gouv.tg), which also handles the immigration form that every traveller fills in before arriving. Under the law on the police of foreigners, Togo no longer issues visas on arrival: travellers who arrive without an approved visa are turned back, and an application still 'awaiting validation' is not accepted at the border.
Citizens of the ECOWAS member states are exempt; for other nationalities the requirement depends on the country that issued the passport, the passport type and any bilateral agreement, and the visa assistant on Togo Voyage shows whether you need a visa. Four visa types exist: tourist (which also covers attending meetings, fairs and conferences on invitation), immigration (study, family or employment, leading to a residence card), professional and courtesy.
Standard processing takes up to five working days, and the platform asks applicants to apply at least five to seven working days before arrival. Requests made at shorter notice are issued as an 'Arrivée Express' visa at double the normal price. Prices depend on the length of stay: tourist and professional visas start at XOF 25,000 for a single entry of up to 15 days. Payment is by Visa or Mastercard or by T-Money and Flooz mobile money; cash is not accepted.
Under Law No. 2022-005 of 15 April 2022 on the police of foreigners, a foreigner who stays in Togo for six uninterrupted months, or for several stays adding up to more than six months in the same year, must apply to the Direction Générale de la Documentation Nationale (DGDN) for a residence card. The DGDN issues temporary cards for one year (XOF 200,000, or XOF 100,000 for students), ordinary cards for three years (XOF 500,000, or XOF 250,000 for students) and privileged cards for five years (XOF 800,000).
