At least half of the working time must be research, funds must reach SEK 9,700 a month, and permits run for up to four years. Migrationsverket aims to decide complete applications within 30 days.

Hosting agreement and approved hosts

The research principal, which can be a university, another research institution or a business, must be approved by the Swedish Research Council. It drafts the hosting agreement, which both you and the principal sign, describing the project, its length, your qualifications and the funding. Teaching and administration do not count towards the research share, which must be at least half of your working hours. Since May 2026 doctoral students with a hosting agreement can also be granted a research permit.

Funding and insurance

Your salary, grant or scholarship must give at least SEK 9,700 a month and cover the trip home. If the permit is shorter than one year you need comprehensive health insurance; with a permit of a year or more you register in the population register and use Swedish public health care.

Applying from abroad

After signing the hosting agreement, apply online and pay SEK 1,500; family members can be added to the same application. You give fingerprints and show your passport at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general. Complete files are usually decided within a month, so the permit card is often the slowest part.

  1. Agree the project with an approved Swedish research principal and sign the hosting agreement.
  2. Confirm funding of at least SEK 9,700 a month and arrange insurance if the stay is under a year.
  3. Apply online, add family members and pay SEK 1,500.
  4. Give fingerprints and show your passport at a Swedish embassy or consulate-general.
  5. Collect the residence permit card and register with Skatteverket after arrival if the permit is for a year or more.

Family and after the project

Spouses, registered or cohabiting partners and children under 18 can come for the same period, and adults may work. From 1 October 2026 Migrationsverket also applies a maintenance requirement to family members of researchers, both on first application and on extension. When the research ends, former researchers can apply for a permit to look for work or start a business, and a first work permit needs only 75 per cent of the median salary for two years.

EU mobility

If you already hold a research permit from another EU state, stays of up to 180 days in any 360-day period need no Swedish permit; longer research stays require a Swedish permit for long-term mobility.
