Temporary residence permit for digital nomads (dovoljenje za začasno prebivanje za digitalnega nomada)
In short
Since 21 November 2025 Slovenia issues a temporary residence permit for digital nomads: non-EU nationals who work remotely for a business based outside Slovenia, or are self-employed abroad. You need monthly income of at least twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia. The permit lasts up to one year, cannot be extended, and family members can be reunited straight away.

Who counts as a digital nomad
Slovenia defines a digital nomad as a foreigner who is not an EU or EEA citizen and who is employed by, or works under a civil-law contract for, a business entity based outside Slovenia, or works as a self-employed person abroad, doing all the work remotely through information and communication technology. Because the person does not enter the Slovenian labour market, no consent from the Employment Service is needed.
You also meet the general conditions for temporary residence: a valid passport, appropriate health insurance, sufficient means of subsistence and a criminal record certificate from your home country.
Income requirement
You must have monthly funds of at least twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia, calculated from the average monthly gross salary most recently published in the Official Gazette. Any lawful source of income can be used as proof, as for other foreigners. The official pages do not state a euro figure, so check the latest published salary before you apply.
This amount covers only you. If family members join you, you must show additional funds for them.
Where to apply
Lodge the application at a Slovenian embassy or consulate abroad. If you are already lawfully in Slovenia, on a valid passport, a residence permit of another EU state, or a C or D visa, you can apply at any administrative unit instead and receive a receipt that counts as a residence permit until the decision. An embassy application does not produce such a receipt.
Fingerprints are taken when you apply or later. You collect the card in person. Once you hold the card and are in Slovenia, register your exact address at the administrative unit within eight days.
- Check that your work is fully remote for a business outside Slovenia or for your own foreign business.
- Calculate twice the latest average net salary and gather income proof.
- Fill in form 44 and prepare insurance and the criminal record.
- Lodge it at a Slovenian embassy or consulate, or at an administrative unit if you are already in Slovenia.
- Collect the card in person.
- Register your address within eight days.
Forms

- Application for a temporary residence permit for family reunification (form 20) · Can be lodged together with the digital nomad application.
No extension, but a change of purpose
The digital nomad permit is issued for at most one year and cannot be extended, reflecting the mobile nature of this group. You can apply for it again once six months have passed since the previous permit expired. If you decide to stay, for example to take a job in Slovenia, you can apply at any time during its validity for another temporary residence permit based on a different purpose.
Family and tax
Digital nomads can reunite family members immediately, with no link to the length of residence or the validity of the permit, and the family application can be lodged at the same time as yours. If you can prove tax residence in your home country with a document from the competent authority, you do not have to register tax residence in Slovenia; if your family moves with you, you become a Slovenian tax resident from the day you and your family enter Slovenia, and registration is done with the Financial Administration.
