How the ETA works

You apply in the visa-on-arrival category on the Pakistan Online Visa System. If approved, the system e-mails an Electronic Travel Authorization. The portal stresses that the ETA is not a visa: it authorises you to travel and to request the visa at the visa-on-arrival counter of the Federal Investigation Agency. The tourist visa itself is issued there, on arrival.

For tourism, submit your intent to travel at least 48–72 hours before departure. Business travellers are advised to apply for the ETA at least 8–10 days before travelling.

  1. Confirm that your country appears on the visa-on-arrival list for your purpose (tourist or business).
  2. Apply in the visa-on-arrival category on the Pakistan Online Visa System.
  3. Submit at least 48–72 hours (tourism) or 8–10 days (business) before your flight.
  4. Print the ETA e-mailed to you and verify it on the portal.
  5. Present the ETA and documents at the visa-on-arrival counter on arrival.

Length of stay

Pakistan’s foreign ministry visa guidance states that a tourist visa on arrival is valid for up to three months and that nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and the UAE may be granted a 30-day multiple-entry visa on arrival. A Business Visa on Arrival is granted for 30 days. Longer stays or other purposes need a regular visa from the online system.

At the airport

Carry the printed ETA and the documents you uploaded. Issuing a visa remains the prerogative of the Government of Pakistan, so the decision is made at the counter. After the visa is issued, the Digital Disembarkation Card in the Pak ID app records your flight, length of stay and contact details in Pakistan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I simply turn up at the airport?

No. Without an approved ETA you cannot use the visa-on-arrival route; the ETA is requested online first.

How long can I stay on a visa on arrival?

A tourist visa on arrival is valid for up to three months; nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and the UAE may be granted a 30-day multiple-entry visa. A business visa on arrival is for 30 days.

Is the visa on arrival better than a regular tourist visa?

It suits short trips. For up to three months or for an extension inside Pakistan, the regular Tourist/Visit visa is the standard route.

What if the visa is refused at the counter?

Issuing a visa is the prerogative of the Government of Pakistan even when an ETA has been granted. Travellers who want certainty before flying can apply instead for a regular tourist or business visa and travel with the Visa Grant Notice.

Do children need their own ETA?

Yes. The online system treats every traveller as a separate applicant, so each child needs an application on their own passport.
