Who qualifies

The visa is designed for foreign citizens of Pakistani origin and their spouses, and Pakistan’s foreign ministry visa guidance lists the documents for foreign spouses of Pakistani nationals under the same heading. Applicants of Afghan origin are asked to use this category only if their spouse is Pakistani.

People of Pakistani origin may qualify for a Pakistan Origin Card (POC) issued by NADRA, in which case they may not need a visa at all. Holders of travel, asylum or temporary documents who are of Pakistani origin use a separate sub-category that gives a single entry of up to 30 days, cannot be extended and takes four weeks.

Proof of origin or marriage

The portal asks for a photograph, passport, POC or similar proof of Pakistani origin, marriage certificate, birth certificate and CNIC or NICOP. For foreign spouses of Pakistani nationals the foreign ministry guidance asks for the marriage certificate together with copies of the Pakistani spouse’s identity card and passport; for Pakistani-origin reunions it accepts proof such as a birth certificate and the parents’ CNICs.

A foreigner who simply wants to visit Pakistani friends or relatives without being of Pakistani origin or married to a Pakistani uses the Tourist/Visit visa instead; the guidance notes that a visit visa application should include an invitation letter with the host’s identity card and a letter from the applicant’s employer.

If officials send the application back for review, you have seven days to resubmit or it is cancelled, and the processing time starts again from resubmission.

Extensions

Family visit visas of foreigners of Pakistani origin can be extended for up to two years; for other foreigners, such as spouses, extensions are granted year by year or as the rules provide. Apply online while in Pakistan with the current visa and entry stamp uploaded under "Other".

  1. Check whether you could obtain a Pakistan Origin Card instead of a visa.
  2. Collect the marriage certificate, birth certificate and the Pakistani relative’s CNIC or NICOP.
  3. Apply in the Family Visit category on the online visa system.
