How visas for Nauru work

Entry to Nauru is governed by the Immigration Act 2014 and the Immigration Regulations 2014. Both are applied by the Immigration Division of the Department of Justice and Border Control, based on the ground floor of the Government Buildings in Yaren District. The division processes visa applications, monitors arrivals and departures, tracks the status of foreign nationals and removes overstayers.

The division lists eight visa classes: visitor, business, local business (employment), residence, regional processing centre, special purpose, temporary settlement and dependant. Each class has its own application form published by the department. A visa is granted before travel on the basis of a written application; the official forms do not describe a visa on arrival.

Applications are lodged with the Immigration Office in Nauru, either in person through a representative or online, and the fee must be paid first: in cash at the Nauru Revenue Office, at a Nauruan mission or consular post for visitor visas, or by electronic bank transfer. Fees are stated in dollars in the official tables; Nauru uses the Australian dollar. A visa holder who stays past the expiry date owes an overstayer fee of 50 dollars for every extra day.
