When a business visa is needed

Citizens of 48 economically developed and migration-stable states, among them the EU states, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan and the Republic of Korea, may enter and leave Kazakhstan without a visa if their stay does not exceed 30 calendar days from the moment they cross the state border. Business travellers who stay longer, or whose nationality is not on the list, need a business visa.

Invitations

Organisations submit their application or verbal note not earlier than 90 calendar days and not later than five working days before the intended entry; the National Security Committee approves within three working days, and on its written request the period can be extended to 30 calendar days. Citizens of the 48 listed states are exempt from presenting an invitation when applying for visas of categories A3, B1, B3, B10 and B12. The online portal accepts invitations only for single-entry visas; for multiple entry the inviting party contacts the migration service.

Passport rules

The passport must be beyond doubt as to authenticity, free of unofficial marks, erasures or loose pages, have at least two blank pages for visas and remain valid at least three months after the requested visa expires; passports with extension marks are not accepted.

Longer stays

Since the Law of 27 December 2019 No. 292-VI, foreigners entering for up to 30 days from the border crossing no longer have to register, and the registration service has been closed on the Visa and Migration Portal. Instead, hosts who are residents of Kazakhstan submit a notification of the foreigner's stay through the portal with an electronic digital signature; children under 16 are exempt from notification. A foreigner who plans to stay longer than 30 days must apply for a temporary residence permit at the migration service at the place of stay; the permit is issued at the request of the receiving party.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Decide whether you need a visa or can travel visa-free for up to 30 days.
  2. Ask the Kazakh partner to file the invitation if your category requires one.
  3. Wait for National Security Committee approval, normally within 3 working days.
  4. Apply at a Kazakh mission, or online for a single-entry business e-visa.
  5. Pay USD 80, or USD 200 per year for multiple entry.
  6. For stays over 30 days, arrange a temporary residence permit through the host.
