Who can enter without a visa
Japan has visa exemption arrangements with about 70 countries and regions, including the EU states, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea and Türkiye. The stay is usually up to 90 days (shorter for some nationalities), some exemptions require a machine-readable, ICAO-compliant passport, and it covers sightseeing, attending conferences, business meetings and contract negotiations, visiting relatives and similar activities that bring no income from Japan.
Holders of non-machine-readable passports may face strict checks or refusal of landing. Even when visa-exempt, you must convince the officer of the purpose and your departure, so carry a return ticket and accommodation details.
Who needs a short-term visa
Nationals without an exemption apply before travel at the Japanese embassy or consulate for their place of residence. Missions take applications only from residents of their jurisdiction, and foreigners applying outside their country of nationality show their residence status there; some missions do not accept holders of short-term residence permits, who must apply in their home country or another country where they hold long-term residence.
Residents of several countries, including the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada, Australia and Brazil, can obtain a single-entry tourist visa online through JAPAN eVISA. Residents of countries not on the eVISA list apply at a mission.
Documents for a short-term visa
Tourism: passport, form, photo, flight itinerary, day-by-day schedule with hotel details and proof of funds. Business: add an employer letter and the Japanese company's invitation letter. On arrival
Visitors give fingerprints and a facial photo at immigration and receive a landing sticker; no residence card is issued. You can pre-register immigration and customs data in Visit Japan Web to get a QR code. Travel medical insurance is not compulsory but MOFA strongly advises it because treatment costs are high.
Extending a short stay
Temporary Visitor stays are extended only in genuinely unavoidable cases, for example illness that prevents travel; you apply at the regional immigration bureau with a medical certificate, proof of funds and onward travel. Overstaying, even by a day, can lead to deportation and a re-entry ban.
How to apply, step by step
- Check MOFA's visa exemption list for your nationality, and that your passport is machine-readable and valid for the whole trip.
- If you are not visa-exempt, book an appointment with the Japanese mission for your place of residence and prepare the documents for your purpose.
- Submit the application in person, by proxy or through an accredited agency where required, and collect the passport after about a week.
- Optionally register in Visit Japan Web before departure to speed up immigration and customs.
- At the airport present your passport, answer the officer's questions and give biometrics; the stay granted is shown on the landing sticker.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do business in Japan visa-free?
You may attend meetings, negotiate contracts, inspect factories or join conferences. Receiving pay from a Japanese source or doing productive work requires a work status.
How many days can a visa-exempt visitor stay in a year?
Each entry can be up to 90 days. There is no published annual cap, but frequent long visits may lead the officer to doubt the purpose and refuse landing.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is not an entry requirement, but MOFA and Japanese embassies strongly recommend medical insurance because hospital costs in Japan can be very high.
Who can use JAPAN eVISA?
Residents of the countries and regions on MOFA's eVISA list, such as the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada, Australia and Brazil, for a single-entry short-term visa. Visa-exempt nationals do not need it for short stays, and residents of other countries apply on paper at a mission.
