Medical documents

Expect to provide an official document from the Greek medical institution confirming the appointment or admission, the expected length and the cost of treatment, plus proof of advance payment or of sufficient funds. A report from your own doctor explaining the need for treatment abroad strengthens the file.

How to apply

Book an appointment with the competent Greek mission or its external service provider in the appropriate category, submit the medical file with the standard documents and pay the fees. Urgent cases can be explained to the consulate, which may accept a late application.

  1. Find the Greek embassy or consulate responsible for your place of legal residence; Greece should be the main destination of your trip.
  2. Book an appointment with the competent Greek mission or its external service provider, choosing the category that matches medical treatment. Apply at least 15 days before travel; the Visa Code allows lodging up to six months ahead.
  3. Prepare the standard Schengen documents plus the purpose-specific papers listed by your mission; bring originals and copies.
  4. Attend in person, give fingerprints if needed and pay the EUR 90 visa fee plus any service fee.
  5. Wait for the decision (normally 15 days); the consulate may ask for more documents or an interview.
  6. Check the visa sticker as soon as you collect your passport and report any error to the consulate immediately.

Treatment longer than 90 days

The Greek Migration Code provides a residence permit for receiving medical, nursing and palliative care. The Ministry of Migration set the sufficient-resources level for this group at EUR 650 per month. You apply for a national visa at the Greek mission before travel.

If an emergency forces you to stay beyond the visa, contact the Aliens Department of the police before it expires.

Companions

A companion applies separately in the same category, attaching the patient’s hospital letter and proof of the relationship, such as a civil-status document.

Can my child come with me for my treatment?
