Who can apply

Non-EU nationals who work remotely, as employees of a company abroad or as self-employed people with clients abroad, and who intend to do so from Greece. You declare that you will not work for Greek employers or clients. The Greek MFA points applicants to the official Work from Greece site for details.

Income threshold

You prove stable income of at least EUR 3,500 per month after tax. The amount rises by 20% if a spouse or cohabiting partner comes with you (EUR 4,200) and by 15% for each child (EUR 525 each). The Ministry of Migration confirmed EUR 3,500 as the sufficient-resources level for digital nomads.

Visa at the consulate, permit in Greece

The consulate examines the general national visa documents plus the declaration of intent, proof of employment or contracts with non-Greek employers or, if self-employed, details of your business, and the income evidence. It must answer within 10 days.

Before the visa expires you can apply online for the digital nomad residence permit, which the one-stop service of the Decentralised Administration where you live issues. Law 5275/2026 amended the Migration Code in 2026, so confirm the current procedure with the consulate before applying.

  1. Check that your net income reaches EUR 3,500 a month, plus 20% for a partner and 15% per child.
  2. Contact the Greek consulate in your country of residence for an appointment or to file by e-mail or registered letter.
  3. Submit the general documents with the remote-work and income evidence; the decision is due within 10 days.
  4. Travel to Greece within the visa validity and arrange private health insurance.
  5. To stay beyond the visa, apply online for the digital nomad residence permit before it expires.

Forms

Tax and health cover

According to Work from Greece, you have no Greek tax liability if you spend fewer than 180 days in a calendar year working for non-Greek employers or clients; staying 180 days or more may make you tax resident and require a Greek tax number. Non-EU nationals need private health insurance, as they are not entitled to public health benefits.

Family

Family members apply for their own national visa (EUR 90) with a family status certificate, criminal record, medical certificate and insurance. If you later hold the residence permit, their permits are requested from the Decentralised Administration.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a contract with a Greek client on this visa?

No. Working for a Greek company, as an employee or freelancer, is excluded and would also make the income taxable in Greece.

Can I apply from Greece as a tourist?

The national visa is issued by the consulate in your country of main residence. Applicants who already hold a Greek long-stay title should ask the Ministry about a change of purpose.

How much do I need with a spouse and two children?

EUR 3,500 + 20% for the spouse (EUR 700) + 15% per child (2 x EUR 525) = EUR 5,250 net per month.

Is the digital nomad visa the same as the financially independent permit?

No. Digital nomads work remotely; the sufficient-resources permit is for people living on income without working. Both use the EUR 3,500 monthly level.
