How visas for France work
Every French visa application starts on France-Visas, the government's official portal, which generates the form, the receipt and a tailored list of documents. You then lodge the file in the country where you legally reside: in most countries at a visa application centre run by an external service provider such as TLScontact or VFS Global, elsewhere at the French consulate itself. The provider only receives the file, collects the fees and takes fingerprints; the consulate responsible for your place of residence takes the decision.
Short stays of up to 90 days use the Schengen visa. France also requires nationals of a list of countries, among them Türkiye, Pakistan and Nigeria, to hold an airport transit visa simply to change planes at a French airport, unless an exemption applies. Stays of more than three months need a long-stay visa; for most purposes it is a "VLS-TS" that doubles as a first-year residence permit once validated online on the ANEF platform within three months of arrival.
Work and talent routes are built around the multi-year "Talent" residence card, which covers qualified employees, EU Blue Card holders, researchers, founders and investors and lets the family follow under a simplified procedure. Since 2026 first multi-year cards and the 10-year resident card require a French language level (A2 and B1 respectively) and a civic exam.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I apply for a French visa?
Start online on France-Visas, then lodge the file in the country where you legally reside, at the French consulate or at the visa application centre of the external provider it uses (such as TLScontact or VFS Global). The consulate responsible for your place of residence decides.
Do I need a visa to change planes in Paris?
Only if your nationality is on France's airport transit list (for example Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal or Türkiye) and no exemption applies. Holders of a valid Schengen visa or residence permit, or of certain US, Canadian or Japanese visas, are exempt.
How much does a French visa cost?
EUR 90 for a Schengen visa (EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12) and EUR 99 for a long-stay visa. Where an external provider receives the file, it adds a service fee that varies by country and cannot exceed EUR 45. Foreign spouses of French nationals pay no visa fee.
What is the VLS-TS?
A long-stay visa that works as a residence permit for the first year. You must validate it online within three months of arrival and pay the residence tax.
How much money do I need for a short stay?
France links the amount to the minimum wage: EUR 65 a day with a hotel booking, EUR 120 a day without, or EUR 32.50 a day if a private host provides an official attestation d'accueil.
