K visa
Added by State Council Order No. 814, in force since 1 October 2025, the K visa targets young foreign science and technology talent: holders of at least a bachelor's degree in a STEM field from a renowned university or research institution in China or abroad, and young people teaching or researching at such institutions. No domestic employer or inviting entity is needed. Compared with other ordinary visas it offers more flexibility in the number of entries, validity and length of stay. Detailed eligibility and document lists are published by Chinese embassies and consulates; check the page of the mission where you apply.
R visa
The R visa is issued to foreign high-level talents and to specialists with skills China urgently needs. The applicant submits a High-level Talent Confirmation Letter or approval issued by the relevant Chinese authority, usually obtained by the employer or host institution. R visa holders benefit from faster handling, multiple entries and longer validity; for employment the category A work permit rules apply.
Documents
For R: the common documents plus the High-level Talent Confirmation Letter. For K: proof of age, education and work or research experience as set out by the mission where you apply.
