2023 6,0923,7381,60826.4% 33.3%
2024 5,4983,6201,25322.8% 27.9%
2025 4,9594,2165269.8% 17.3%

In 2025, Austria’s embassy and consulates in Russia (Moscow) received 4,959 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 4,216. 9.8% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 22.8%: the rate fell by 13.0 points, a clear improvement for applicants. Applications fell by 10% compared with 2024 (5,498).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 6.4% of the applications lodged in Russia that year, from 0.9% at the consulates of the Netherlands to 19.8% at those of Malta. Austria’s consulates worldwide refused 11.9%. Austria was the 11th most applied-for Schengen state in Russia.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Russia, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
