Austria tourist visa (Schengen type C)

Schengen visa (type C) for individual tourism

In short

Holidays with Austria as main destination need a Schengen visa if your nationality is visa-required. You apply at the Austrian embassy or consulate responsible for your place of legal residence, or its external service provider, pay EUR 90 and prove sufficient means, which Austria assesses case by case rather than by a fixed daily amount.

Students, pensioners and people without income

Students add a student certificate from their school or university that also confirms the leave of absence. Pensioners prove their pension with bank statements or the pension award. Applicants without their own income, such as homemakers or students, may submit the work documents of their spouse or parents. Check the information sheet of the Austrian mission responsible for you, as document lists vary by location.

Main destination and passport

Apply for Austria only if it is your main destination; if no main destination can be determined, the country of first entry into the Schengen area is responsible. Apply at the Austrian representation in whose consular district you legally reside. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years, be valid at least three months beyond the visa and have two blank pages.

Translations

Documents in other languages need an informal German or English translation; certification is not required. Hotel bookings must cover the whole stay.

Required documents

Identity

  • Application form completed in block letters and signed, with current e-mail and mobile number
  • Passport valid at least three months beyond the visa, issued within 10 years, two blank pages; if you are not a national of the country where you apply, proof of legal residence there
  • Two recent biometric colour photos, 3.5 × 4.5 cm, light background

  • Return reservation (flight, train or bus); by car: vehicle registration, international licence and route

  • Recent bank statements (one-off deposits without proof of origin may be disregarded)

Work

  • Employees: employment certificate in German or English and recent payslips; business owners: company registration documents

Insurance

  • Travel health and accident insurance, minimum EUR 30,000 per case, valid in all Schengen states

Supporting documents (where they apply)

Money

  • Pensioners: pension statement or pension award

Study

  • Students: student certificate (preferably with QR code) confirming the leave of absence

Family

  • Minors travelling alone or with one parent: notarised consent of the parent(s) not travelling; for divorced parents, proof of custody

Proof of funds

Austria has no reference amount; means for the stay and the return journey are judged case by case according to the purpose and length of stay. Missions usually ask for recent bank statements, and one-off deposits without proof of origin may not be counted. If someone else pays, add their cost-coverage declaration and passport copy, or a host in Austria can sign an electronic declaration of liability (EVE).

Fees and payment

The visa fee is EUR 90 (children aged 6 to under 12 EUR 45, under 6 free), paid when you apply in the way the mission sets. Some groups listed in the Visa Code, such as pupils on school trips and family of EU citizens, pay nothing. An external service provider adds its own service fee.

When to apply and how long it takes

Applications are accepted at the earliest six months and at the latest 15 calendar days before departure. The decision is normally taken within 15 calendar days and can take up to 45 days in individual cases. Send further documents only when the mission asks for them.

Registration on arrival

Anyone who stays in a flat or house in Austria, including as a guest of friends or relatives, must register with the local registration office within three days of arrival. Hotels handle this through their guest register.

Refusal

False statements or forged documents lead to refusal, and incomplete files may be rejected or take much longer. A refusal states the reasons and the legal remedy, an appeal to the Federal Administrative Court; you can also apply again with a complete file. The fee is not refunded.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Confirm that Austria is your main destination and find the Austrian embassy or consulate responsible for your place of legal residence.
  2. Download that mission's information sheet for tourism and prepare the documents, with German or English translations where needed.
  3. Book an appointment as the mission instructs, either with the mission itself or with its external service provider.
  4. Lodge the file in person, give fingerprints and pay EUR 90 plus any service fee.
  5. Wait for the decision, normally within 15 calendar days, and collect your passport.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum amount of money?

No fixed amount; the mission assesses your means case by case.

How do I pay the visa fee?

As the mission or its service provider instructs; accepted currencies and payment methods differ from country to country.

Do I book the appointment with the embassy?

It depends on the country: some Austrian missions take appointments themselves, others only through an external service provider. The mission's website says which.

How early can I apply for an Austrian tourist visa?

At the earliest six months and at the latest 15 calendar days before the trip.

Can someone else pay for my trip?

Yes. The sponsor gives a written cost-coverage declaration in German or English with a copy of their passport data page; if it is not notarised, the sponsor must come in person when you apply.

Does insurance have to cover the whole validity of a multiple-entry visa?

No. For a multiple-entry visa with longer validity, insurance for the first trip is enough.
