Greece: visa decisions in Iraq

YearApplicationsVisas issuedRefusedRefusal rateMultiple-entry share
2023 3,5681,7431,75650.1% 22.0%
2024 3,8722,1241,64343.6% 27.8%
2025 6,6993,7262,48540.0% 25.0%

In 2025, Greece’s embassy and consulates in Iraq (Erbil and Baghdad) received 6,699 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 3,726. The refusal rate was 40.0%. The refusal rate fell by 3.6 points from 43.6% in 2024. Applications rose by 73% compared with 2024 (3,872).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 34.3% of the applications lodged in Iraq that year, from 25.0% at the consulates of Italy to 84.2% at those of Hungary. Greece’s consulates worldwide refused 14.5%. Greece was the 4th most applied-for Schengen state in Iraq.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Iraq, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
