Germany: visa decisions in China
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 160,479 | 155,950 | 3,784 | 2.4% | 98.5% |
| 2024 | 263,088 | 253,505 | 8,050 | 3.1% | 96.5% |
| 2025 | 281,570 | 270,116 | 10,381 | 3.7% | 97.4% |
In 2025, Germany’s embassy and consulates in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Shenyang) received 281,570 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 270,116. 3.7% of applications were refused. In 2024 the rate was much the same, 3.1%. Applications rose by 7% compared with 2024 (263,088).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 4.0% of the applications lodged in China that year, from 1.3% at the consulates of Luxembourg to 19.3% at those of Malta. Germany’s consulates worldwide refused 13.1%. Germany was the 3rd most applied-for Schengen state in China.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in China, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
