France: visa decisions in China
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 271,111 | 251,964 | 14,005 | 5.3% | 21.1% |
| 2024 | 458,018 | 429,973 | 24,410 | 5.4% | 18.5% |
| 2025 | 453,348 | 429,646 | 23,363 | 5.2% | 18.4% |
In 2025, France’s embassy and consulates in China (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Wuhan) received 453,348 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 429,646. The refusal rate was 5.2%. That is barely different from 2024 (5.4%). The number of applications was almost unchanged (458,018 in 2024).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 4.0% of the applications lodged in China that year, from 1.3% at the consulates of Luxembourg to 19.3% at those of Malta. France’s consulates worldwide refused 14.2%. France was the most applied-for Schengen state in China.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in China, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
