Romania: visa decisions in Australia
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 (part of the year) | 40 | 38 | 0 | 0.0% | 15.8% |
| 2025 | 46 | 42 | 4 | 8.7% | 11.9% |
In 2025, Romania’s embassy and consulates in Australia (Sydney and Melbourne) received 46 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 42. The refusal rate was 8.7%. The refusal rate rose by 8.7 points from 0.0% in 2024, a sharp increase. Applications rose by 15% compared with 2024 (40).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 3.0% of the applications lodged in Australia that year, from 0.6% at the consulates of Switzerland to 8.8% at those of the Netherlands. Romania’s consulates worldwide refused 11.5%. Romania was the 16th most applied-for Schengen state in Australia.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. Romania only began issuing Schengen visas on 31 March 2024, so its 2024 figures cover part of the year. The figures cover applications lodged in Australia, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
