Malta: visa decisions in Australia
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 56 | 49 | 0 | 0.0% | 18.4% |
| 2024 | 59 | 56 | 28 | 33.3% | 10.7% |
| 2025 | 67 | 63 | 4 | 6.0% | 6.3% |
In 2025, Malta’s embassy and consulates in Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra) received 67 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 63. The refusal rate was 6.0%. The refusal rate fell by 27.4 points from 33.3% in 2024, a clear improvement for applicants. Applications rose by 14% compared with 2024 (59).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 3.0% of the applications lodged in Australia that year, from 0.6% at the consulates of Switzerland to 8.8% at those of the Netherlands. Malta’s consulates worldwide refused 38.4%. Malta was the 14th most applied-for Schengen state in Australia.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Australia, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
