France: visa decisions in Australia
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 2,388 | 2,407 | 13 | 0.5% | 20.4% |
| 2024 | 2,059 | 1,928 | 76 | 3.8% | 18.3% |
| 2025 | 2,984 | 2,868 | 144 | 4.8% | 16.9% |
In 2025, France’s embassy and consulates in Australia (Sydney and Canberra) received 2,984 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 2,868. 4.8% of applications were refused. In 2024 the rate was much the same, 3.8%. Applications rose by 45% compared with 2024 (2,059).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 3.0% of the applications lodged in Australia that year, from 0.6% at the consulates of Switzerland to 8.8% at those of the Netherlands. France’s consulates worldwide refused 14.2%. France was the 3rd most applied-for Schengen state in Australia.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Australia, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
