How visas for Tonga work
Visas for the Kingdom of Tonga are handled by the Immigration and Citizenship Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nuku'alofa, under the Immigration Act. The Ministry processes visas for foreign visitors, while Tongan embassies and consulates accept applications from abroad and some nationalities obtain a visa on arrival at the main ports of entry.
Citizens of visa waiver countries, a list published by the Embassy of Tonga in Beijing that includes Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Japan, most Pacific states, many European countries and Turkey, receive a free visitor's visa for 31 days on arrival, which can be extended up to six months; Schengen nationals receive 90 days. Other nationals need an entry visa issued as a letter before they travel.
Long-stay visas are tied to a purpose and supported by documents: an employment or business visa needs a letter of support from the Ministry of Labour, Commerce and Industries (MLCI), a medical report and a police clearance; student, assured income (retirement) and residency visas each have their own checklist. A visitor's visa never allows employment, business or study.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Tonga?
Not in advance if your nationality is on the visa waiver list published by the Embassy of Tonga in Beijing, which includes Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, China, Japan, most Pacific and many European states. You then receive a free 31-day visitor's visa on arrival if you hold a return ticket. Other nationals need an entry visa before travelling.
How long can I stay in Tonga without applying in advance?
Waiver nationals get 31 days on arrival, extendable up to six months; Schengen nationals get 90 days.
Can I look for work or start a business on a visitor's visa?
No. A visitor's visa prohibits business, employment and study. Anyone entering as a visitor with the intention of setting up a business must tell Immigration in advance and in writing, otherwise a fee of TOP 1,150 applies.
What happens if I overstay?
The Immigration Division's checklists list a penalty fee of TOP 1,150 for overstaying, and the visitor's visa form warns that overstayers may be prosecuted and face imprisonment, a fine or both.
