Issuing authority and legal basis

The eVisa is issued by the Department of E-Visa and Immigration Service within the Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passports and Immigration of the South Sudan National Police, Ministry of Interior. The portal is part of the government eServices single-window system, which lists two visa services for foreigners: the eVisa and the eVisa Renewal.

Entry rules come from the Passports and Immigration Act, 2011. It states that no foreigner may enter without a valid visa unless exempted, and that people may enter or leave only through the points of entry prescribed by the Minister.

Conditions for a visa

Under section 14 of the Act a visa is granted to a foreigner who holds a passport valid for the whole stay, can show enough money to cover personal expenses in South Sudan and the return to the country of origin, and carries the vaccination or immunisation certificates set by the Minister of Health. A visa can be refused, among other grounds, to a person previously declared undesirable or deported, a person without the required vaccination certificates, or a person considered a risk to public security.

Three steps online

Create an account and fill in the visa application form; pay the application fees online with a credit or debit card; download the eVisa PDF within 72 hours from anywhere. The portal does not publish fees on its public pages, and the amount due is displayed during the application.

  1. Check with the South Sudanese mission covering your country whether you should use the eVisa.
  2. Create an account on evisa.gov.ss and fill in the application form.
  3. Pay the fee shown during the application with a credit or debit card.
  4. Download the eVisa PDF within 72 hours and print or save it.
  5. Present the PDF at the port of entry for verification and the passport stamp.
  6. Use the eVisa Renewal service or contact the Directorate before the visa expires if you need more time.

At the port of entry

Download the PDF before departure and print it or save it on a mobile device. Present it to the visa officer at the port of entry, such as Juba International Airport, who verifies the visa and checks travel documents, which the portal says takes about five minutes. If there is no issue with the application or documents, the officer stamps the passport with the visa.

Foreigners staying longer than three months must, under section 25 of the Act, report to the nearest competent authority within three days of entry to register; the Act exempts tourists staying up to three months from this registration chapter.

Renewal and extension

The immigration eServices system offers a separate eVisa Renewal service. The Embassy in Washington adds that requests to extend a stay must be submitted to the Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration of the Ministry of Interior before the visa expires.

Before travelling

Several South Sudanese embassies still issue visas themselves, and the Embassy in Washington currently states that e-visa or online applications are temporarily suspended at its level and that it accepts applications in person or by mail. Confirm with the mission covering your country which channel applies to you, and check official security information for your entry point before booking.
