The e-visa covers guest and business visits, tourism and participation in scientific, cultural, social and political, economic and sporting events. Holders may travel throughout Russia except to areas that require special permits. For any other purpose, such as work or study, you need a regular visa from a consular post.
How to apply
Create an account on evisa.kdmid.ru or in the MFA app, fill in the form, upload a JPEG scan of your passport data page and a 35 x 45 photo taken within six months, and pay the fee by Visa or MasterCard; it is not refunded. Apply no earlier than 86 days and no later than 4 days before entry. The application is processed within four calendar days; if data are wrong it is returned for correction within two days. Your passport must be machine-readable, issued by your country of nationality and valid for six months from the application. Each child needs a separate e-visa.
- Check that your entry and exit points are on the e-visa list of border crossings.
- Register on evisa.kdmid.ru or in the Russian MFA mobile app.
- Fill in the form, upload the passport scan and photo, and give consent to data processing.
- Pay the fee by card between 86 and 4 days before your entry date.
- Track the status; correct the form if it is returned for editing.
- Print the e-visa notification and travel with medical insurance.
Migration registration and migration card
Within seven working days of arriving at your place of stay, the receiving party (a hotel, landlord, employer or university) must notify the migration authorities of your arrival under the Law on Migration Registration. Keep the tear-off part of the notification and your migration card, which you receive at the border, until departure. Overstaying or working outside your visa purpose can lead to fines, expulsion and an entry ban.
Entry points, insurance and limits
You must enter and leave through the border crossing points on the government's e-visa list. Medical insurance valid in Russia for the whole stay is compulsory, except for citizens of countries exempt by reciprocity. The 30-day stay is counted in calendar days, not 720 hours, so use the official visa calculator. The e-visa can only be extended for emergency treatment, force majeure or natural disasters, by the Ministry of Internal Affairs issuing a regular visa.
