Paraguay tourist visa and visa-free entry
Tourist entry (estadía transitoria) and extension of stay (prórroga de permanencia transitoria)
In short
Many nationalities can visit Paraguay without a visa for up to 90 days; the DNM's visa table shows, country by country, whether a visa is needed to enter and whether one is needed to stay longer. The stay can be extended once by up to 90 more days through the DNM for 5 jornales (PYG 585,385), but for most visa-free nationalities outside MERCOSUR the table requires a consular visa to extend the stay, apply for residence or carry out paid work.

Who needs a visa
The DNM's visa information table lists, for each country, the legal basis (a MERCOSUR arrangement, a bilateral agreement, a law or a decree) and two requirements: a visa to enter as a tourist, and a visa to extend the stay, apply for residence or carry out lucrative activities. MERCOSUR and associated states (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) need neither. Most other listed countries, among them the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, most EU states, Japan, Israel, Australia and New Zealand, are visa-free for tourist stays of up to 90 days but need a visa for the second purpose; some, such as South Korea and Singapore, have 30 days. Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Liechtenstein and Switzerland need no visa for either.
Anyone planning to stay longer or settle should therefore check the table and obtain the relevant consular visa first if it is required, since the DNM asks for 'the consular visa and its verification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where required' in extension and residence files.
Fees and fines
DNM fees are set in jornales (daily minimum wages). Under Decree 6225/2026 and DNM Resolution 478/2026, in force from 1 July 2026, one jornal is PYG 117,077. An extension of stay costs 5 jornales, PYG 585,385 in cash, or slightly more by card. Overstaying the authorised stay is fined 6 jornales, PYG 702,462, and so is being found without an entry record.
Extending a transitory stay
The extension (prórroga de permanencia transitoria) is for foreigners on a transitory stay: tourists, passengers in transit, border residents, people receiving medical treatment and crew members. It is granted for up to 90 calendar days, once, at the applicant's request and for no longer than the period first granted, at the DNM's discretion. It can be requested in person or online through the paraguay.gov.py portal.
Applicants present the original and an authenticated copy of a valid identity document of their country, the consular visa and its verification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where required, and proof of entry: the stamped migration slip or the entry stamp in the passport. Minors need additional documents, such as both parents' signatures or a notarised authorisation from an absent parent.
Limits of a tourist stay
A tourist stay does not allow paid work, and for nationalities whose column shows 'visa required' moving on to residence needs a consular visa. People who intend to settle should plan the consular visa before travelling and then file their temporary residence in person at the DNM, where the application gives them precarious resident status while it is processed.
