Nigeria retirement visa (N5A, N5B)
Retirement Visas N5B (retiree from abroad) and N5A (retired in Nigeria)
In short
Nigeria has two retirement classes for people aged 65 and over. N5B is for retirees from abroad who want to settle in Nigeria on pension or other retirement income; the NIS Service Level Agreement gives a two-year multiple-entry residence permit without the right to work. N5A is for foreigners who retired in Nigeria after at least 20 years of work there and grants indefinite residence.

Who qualifies
N5B is for foreign nationals aged 65 or above who retired abroad and now wish to reside in Nigeria. You need proof of retirement, such as a pension statement or retirement certificate, evidence of sufficient retirement income, proof of sufficient funds and a police clearance certificate. The NIS visa page recommends health insurance and says renewals depend on continued proof of stable income.
N5A is for foreign nationals aged 65 or above who have worked in Nigeria for at least 20 years, retired there and wish to stay. They prove retirement, long-term residence in Nigeria and medical insurance, and add a police clearance certificate and proof of funds.
Documents
Both classes start with a passport valid for at least six months with two blank pages and a recent photograph on a white background. NIS does not publish a minimum pension amount; the income and funds must be sufficient to live in Nigeria without working.

Where to apply
N5B is filed on visa.immigration.gov.ng and completed with an interview and biometric capture at a Nigerian embassy. The NIS target is 10 days from enrolment and the visa is valid for 90 days to enter.
N5A applicants are already in Nigeria: the Service Level Agreement directs them to apply online with NIS headquarters, submit the requirements and pay the fees. The Service Level Agreement refers both classes to its Appendix II for fees without printing an amount, so confirm the fee with NIS.
- Check that you are 65 or older and choose N5B (retired abroad) or N5A (retired in Nigeria).
- Gather pension proof, bank statements and a police clearance certificate.
- For N5B apply on visa.immigration.gov.ng; for N5A apply online with NIS headquarters.
- Pay the fee and attend the interview and biometric capture.
- After arrival, obtain the CERPAC and renew N5B before it expires.
Living in Nigeria as a retiree
Retirees receive a CERPAC as their residence card; the NIS CERPAC page names foreigners aged 65 and above who wish to reside in Nigeria after their years of service among the eligible groups. Neither N5A nor N5B allows employment. NIS lists N5B as renewable and N5A as an indefinite class that does not need renewal as long as the passport stays valid. A spouse and other dependants can apply under N6A to N6D.
