Who needs a visa

Niger requires a visa from all foreigners except ECOWAS citizens and nationals of states that have short-stay visa waiver agreements with Niger; some agreements cover only diplomatic or service passports, so ordinary passport holders of those countries still need a visa. The embassy in Copenhagen notes that, because several Niger embassies are not currently issuing visas, some applicants living outside the Nordic countries may also apply there after contacting the embassy.

Documents

Embassies ask for the visa application form completed and signed by the applicant, a valid passport and a photocopy of it, photos, and an invitation letter for Niger or proof of accommodation; some also ask for proof of occupation and French translations of documents in other languages. The embassy in Copenhagen requires a passport valid for at least six months and adds documents by purpose: a mission order for official missions; an invitation from the Nigerien business partner with proof of its registration and the identity document of its head for business trips; a filming authorisation from Niger's Ministry of Communication for journalists; and, for private and tourist visits, the host's identity or residence document plus a work and leave certificate or proof of retirement. Both a return ticket and accommodation proof are part of the Copenhagen file.

How to apply

Procedures differ by embassy: some take applications in person at set hours, others by post. In Copenhagen the procedure has two phases: you first email or post copies of the documents with the bank receipt, and processing starts only once the file is complete; when the embassy confirms the visa can be issued, you send the original passport, the original form, an extra photo and the fee. Copenhagen requires its own form DK01072018, with details matching the passport exactly, and asks applicants to apply three to four weeks before departure.

  1. Identify the Niger embassy that accepts applications from your country of residence.
  2. Gather the documents for your purpose and have any non-French documents translated where required.
  3. Pay the visa fee by bank transfer and keep the receipt.
  4. File the application at the embassy, in person or as the embassy instructs.
  5. Collect the passport with the visa and travel with your yellow fever certificate.

Entering Niger

Carry the yellow fever vaccination certificate, which is required on entry to Niger, along with your passport bearing the visa. Minors need their own passport, travel authorisation from both parents with their identity documents, a birth certificate and a school registration certificate, plus proof of the relationship with the person visited if travelling alone to see a parent.
