Mexico digital nomad route: temporary resident visa by economic solvency

Temporary resident visa by economic solvency (visa de residente temporal), the usual route for remote workers

In short

Mexico has no dedicated digital nomad visa. People who earn foreign income and want to live in Mexico for more than 180 days normally apply for a temporary resident visa by economic solvency at a Mexican consulate. The visa costs USD 56; the SRE procedure page asks for monthly net income above 680 days of UMA over the last six months (MXN 79,770.80 a month at the 2026 UMA). Temporary residence lasts more than 180 days and up to 4 years.

Why remote workers use temporary residence

The SRE lists economic solvency as one of the grounds for a temporary resident visa, alongside scientific research, invitations from organisations, international mobility agreements, family unity, property ownership and investment. Because Mexico has no separate nomad category, a remote worker paid from abroad qualifies on solvency, not on the job itself. Stays of up to 180 days can be made on a visitor visa instead, without paid activity in Mexico.

Solvency evidence

The SRE procedure page asks for documents showing employment or a pension with monthly net income above 680 days of UMA during the last six months; with the 2026 UMA of MXN 117.31 this is MXN 79,770.80 a month. It also accepts bank statements of balances, salaries, investments or pensions with the monthly average the regulations set, and ownership of real estate in Mexico worth more than 40,000 days of the general minimum wage in Mexico City. Consulates publish the current amounts in local currency.

Application and exchange in Mexico

Book through Mi Consulado, attend with the form, passport, solvency documents and fee, and complete the interview and biometrics. The visa is valid for 180 days. After entering Mexico you complete the INM procedure to exchange the visa for a temporary resident card, which documents stays of more than 180 days and up to 4 years.

  1. Calculate the solvency amount with the current UMA and check the figure the consulate where you apply uses.
  2. Collect 6 months of income evidence or 12 months of bank statements as required.
  3. Book an appointment via Mi Consulado and attend in person with all originals.
  4. Pay USD 56, give biometrics and complete the interview.
  5. Enter Mexico within 180 days and exchange the visa for a temporary resident card at the INM.

Work and tax considerations

Temporary residence by solvency is for people who support themselves from their own means. Working for a Mexican employer or receiving payment in Mexico requires permission for paid activities from the INM. Questions about tax residence should be checked with Mexico's tax authority.
