Jamaica work visa (work permit)
Work permit and employment endorsement
In short
Foreign nationals who will work in Jamaica need a work permit from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, which administers the Foreign Nationals and Commonwealth Citizens (Employment) Act. The application is made through the prospective employer, sponsor, contractor or a legal representative; investors apply through JAMPRO. Once employed, the foreign worker has PICA extend their stay and endorse the passport for the work period, presenting the work permit, its receipt or an exemption letter.

Applying for the permit
The Ministry's Work Permit Unit issues a work permit card bearing a unique number and photograph, authorising work for a designated period under the terms in the permit letter. Applications are made through the prospective employer, sponsor, contractor or a legal representative; investors apply through the Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO). Part I of the form is completed by the applicant and Part II by the employer, who must describe the steps taken to recruit a Jamaican for the job.
A non-refundable processing fee is paid with the application, and after approval the employer pays the work permit fee before the permit is issued. Permits are not transferable: changing employer requires a new application with evidence that the previous employment has ended.
- Your employer files the work permit application with the Ministry of Labour.
- After approval, the employer pays the work permit fee.
- Take the permit to PICA to have your passport endorsed.
- Register with PICA if you will stay more than six months.
Endorsement by PICA
Foreign nationals in employment must have their stay extended and their passport endorsed by PICA to reflect the work period. Bring a passport valid for at least six more months, the work permit, its receipt, a work permit exemption or the Ministry's letter, an entry visa if applicable and the fee. PICA processes extensions within three working days. Non-Commonwealth nationals over 16 staying more than six months also register for JM$2,000.
Dependants and exemptions
A spouse, or a parent aged 60 or over, who does not work and depends on the foreign worker can extend their stay as a dependant, presenting the principal's passport and work permit or exemption letter and the original marriage, birth or adoption certificate. The Exemptions Regulations of 1964 list categories exempt from the work permit requirement; exemptions are requested on the same application form with a letter from the employer or sponsor.
