Cameroon transit visa: rules, fees and documents

Transit visa (visa de transit)

In short

Travellers who pass through Cameroon on the way to another country apply for a transit visa on evisacam.cm. Decree No. 2023/147 limits it to five days with multiple entries and exits; MINREX keeps it free, and the 2024 finance ordinance sets 100,000 XAF for a transit of more than four days.

When a transit visa is needed

The decree treats foreigners in transit as a category of their own, separate from temporary visitors, and gives them a dedicated transit visa that may allow several entries and exits but cannot exceed five days. It is meant for travellers whose final destination is another country and who need to enter Cameroonian territory on the way, for example to change flights in Douala or Yaoundé with an overnight stop, or to cross the country by road.

Cameroon's official sources do not publish a rule on airside transfers without entering the country. If you will leave the international transit area, or are unsure whether your connection allows you to stay airside, check with the airline or the mission before travelling rather than assuming no visa is needed.

Documents for a transit visa

Article 34 of the decree lists four requirements: a passport or travel document valid for at least six months; an air ticket valid to the final destination or other proof that the journey continues; a visa or entry authorisation for the country of final destination where one is required; and the required international vaccination certificates, which in practice means yellow fever. The Washington mission adds that the destination visa must already be obtained before the transit request is filed, and asks for the airline or agency itinerary showing the leg from Cameroon to the destination.

Fees: free up to four days

MINREX's e-Visa page states that the transit visa, with a maximum duration of five days, remains free. Ordinance No. 2024/001 of 20 June 2024, which amended the 2024 finance law, introduced a charge of 100,000 XAF for a transit visa of more than four days. The Washington mission's January 2026 table matches this: free up to four days, and USD 181.82 beyond. The High Commission in London describes transit visas of 4 to 30 days at EUR 153, which goes beyond the five-day ceiling in the decree; rely on the options and price the portal shows when you pay.

Applying and entering

The transit visa follows the same route as every other Cameroonian visa: pre-enrolment and uploads on evisacam.cm, payment step (zero for a short transit), examination by the competent mission, then either biometric enrolment at the mission or an online authorisation with a QR code that lets the border post print the sticker on arrival. A transit visa cannot later be turned into a short-stay visa inside Cameroon, because the decree prohibits switching visa categories. If you may want to stay longer, apply for the short-stay visa from the start.

  1. Obtain the visa for your final destination first, if it requires one.
  2. Create an account on evisacam.cm and choose the transit visa.
  3. Upload passport, onward ticket, destination visa and vaccination certificate.
  4. Complete the payment step (free up to four days) and follow the status online.
  5. Get the sticker at the mission or travel with the QR authorisation for issue at the border.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I stay on a Cameroon transit visa?

At most five days under Decree No. 2023/147. A transit longer than four days is charged 100,000 XAF under the 2024 finance ordinance.

Is the transit visa really free?

Yes for a transit of up to four days, as MINREX and the Washington mission state. You still have to apply online and complete biometric enrolment.

Can I change a transit visa into a tourist visa after arrival?

No. The decree states that entry visas cannot be changed from one category to another; you would need to apply for a short-stay visa instead.
