Bolivia work visa (visa de objeto determinado)

Special-purpose visa for work and other activities (visa de objeto determinado)

In short

Bolivia's visa de objeto determinado is the consular visa for stays with a specific purpose other than tourism: work, short-term work, volunteering, academic exchange work, religious activities, health and family reasons. Its validity depends on the purpose. Applicants show a document proving the activity, usually an invitation from the Bolivian entity or company, a criminal record certificate and proof of solvency.

Purposes covered

The visa authorises foreigners to enter Bolivia to stay for reasons other than tourism. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists work, short-term work (trabajo transitorio), volunteering, work through academic exchange, religious activities, health and family. How long the visa is valid depends on the purpose. After arrival, people who will stay longer apply to DIGEMIG for a temporary residence permit that matches their activity.

Requirements

All applicants submit the sworn statement visa application form, a passport valid for at least six months, a document proving the activity they will carry out in Bolivia, and a police, criminal or judicial record certificate from their country of origin or residence if they are over 16. An invitation letter from the entity or company with supporting documents is required except for short-term work, health and family.

Proof of solvency through a bank statement or credit card is required except for religious and family purposes. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is needed for visits to high-risk endemic areas, and a recent 4 x 4 cm photo with a red background.

Applying

Apply at a Bolivian embassy or consulate before travelling. Choose the purpose that matches your activity, since documents and validity differ. Applicants should have their criminal record certificate and company documents apostilled or legalised and translated into Spanish, and confirm the fee with the consulate, as it is not shown on the general visa page.

  1. Identify the purpose of your stay and obtain the invitation or activity document.
  2. Prepare the criminal record certificate and proof of solvency.
  3. Apply at a Bolivian embassy or consulate.
  4. After arrival, apply to DIGEMIG for the temporary residence.

After arrival

Visitors who remain in Bolivia for work or another long-term purpose must regularise their stay with DIGEMIG through a temporary residence permit. DIGEMIG's departmental administrations in each department handle these applications. Working on a tourist stay is not allowed.
