Malta: visa decisions in the United Arab Emirates
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 2,274 | 1,217 | 265 | 17.8% | 23.8% |
| 2024 | 1,464 | 776 | 636 | 45.0% | 66.5% |
| 2025 | 7,079 | 3,809 | 3,235 | 45.9% | 51.7% |
In 2025, Malta’s embassy and consulates in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai City and Abu Dhabi Island and Internal Islands City) received 7,079 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 3,809. The refusal rate was 45.9%. That is barely different from 2024 (45.0%). Applications rose by 384% compared with 2024 (1,464).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 24.2% of the applications lodged in the United Arab Emirates that year, from 10.9% at the consulates of Latvia to 58.2% at those of Bulgaria. Malta’s consulates worldwide refused 38.4%. Malta was the 14th most applied-for Schengen state in the United Arab Emirates.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in the United Arab Emirates, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
