Italy: visa decisions in Sri Lanka

2023 4,0312,2401,79144.4% 17.2%
2024 4,4312,6651,76339.8% 29.5%
2025 5,0613,1131,94838.5% 72.3%

In 2025, Italy’s embassy and consulates in Sri Lanka (Colombo) received 5,061 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 3,113. 38.5% of applications were refused. In 2024 the rate was much the same, 39.8%. Applications rose by 14% compared with 2024 (4,431).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 29.1% of the applications lodged in Sri Lanka that year. Italy’s consulates worldwide refused 10.8%. Italy was the 3rd most applied-for Schengen state in Sri Lanka.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Sri Lanka, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
