YearApplicationsVisas issuedRefusedRefusal rateMultiple-entry share
2023 41,11339,5921,4593.5% 97.2%
2024 50,41048,2302,0904.1% 95.5%
2025 83,18981,2101,9792.4% 96.3%

In 2025, Italy’s embassy and consulates in Saudi Arabia (Riyadh and Jeddah) received 83,189 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 81,210. The refusal rate was 2.4%. The refusal rate fell by 1.8 points from 4.1% in 2024. Applications rose by 65% compared with 2024 (50,410).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 5.2% of the applications lodged in Saudi Arabia that year, from 1.6% at the consulates of Austria to 55.4% at those of Bulgaria. Italy’s consulates worldwide refused 10.8%. Italy was the 2nd most applied-for Schengen state in Saudi Arabia.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Saudi Arabia, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
