Spain: visa decisions in Nigeria
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 12,954 | 6,257 | 6,457 | 50.8% | 14.8% |
| 2024 | 12,968 | 4,722 | 7,673 | 61.7% | 13.5% |
| 2025 | 9,489 | 3,669 | 5,005 | 55.8% | 10.0% |
In 2025, Spain’s embassy and consulates in Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) received 9,489 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 3,669. The refusal rate was 55.8%. The refusal rate fell by 5.9 points from 61.7% in 2024, a clear improvement for applicants. Applications fell by 27% compared with 2024 (12,968).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 47.9% of the applications lodged in Nigeria that year, from 27.2% at the consulates of Switzerland to 66.1% at those of Bulgaria. Spain’s consulates worldwide refused 14.6%. Spain was the 3rd most applied-for Schengen state in Nigeria.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Nigeria, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
