Portugal: visa decisions in Nigeria

YearApplicationsVisas issuedRefusedRefusal rateMultiple-entry share
2023 1,9258601,06554.9% 22.7%
2024 2,3168901,34760.2% 48.9%
2025 3,0261,3131,71356.3% 47.9%

In 2025, Portugal’s embassy and consulates in Nigeria (Abuja) received 3,026 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 1,313. The refusal rate was 56.3%. The refusal rate fell by 3.9 points from 60.2% in 2024. Applications rose by 31% compared with 2024 (2,316).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 47.9% of the applications lodged in Nigeria that year, from 27.2% at the consulates of Switzerland to 66.1% at those of Bulgaria. Portugal’s consulates worldwide refused 23.3%. Portugal was the 6th most applied-for Schengen state in Nigeria.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Nigeria, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
