Italy: visa decisions in Nigeria
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 16,022 | 10,584 | 5,417 | 33.8% | 72.1% |
| 2024 | 13,703 | 8,482 | 5,174 | 37.8% | 52.1% |
| 2025 | 13,563 | 7,804 | 5,759 | 42.2% | 51.7% |
In 2025, Italy’s embassy and consulates in Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) received 13,563 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 7,804. 42.2% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 37.8%: the rate rose by 4.4 points. The number of applications was almost unchanged (13,703 in 2024).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 47.9% of the applications lodged in Nigeria that year, from 27.2% at the consulates of Switzerland to 66.1% at those of Bulgaria. Italy’s consulates worldwide refused 10.8%. Italy was the 2nd most applied-for Schengen state in Nigeria.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Nigeria, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
