YearApplicationsVisas issuedRefusedRefusal rateMultiple-entry share
2023 1,00641958758.3% 15.3%
2024 64426238259.3% 16.4%
2025 62829132952.8% 18.9%

In 2025, Hungary’s embassy and consulates in Nigeria (Abuja) received 628 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 291. 52.8% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 59.3%: the rate fell by 6.5 points, a clear improvement for applicants. The number of applications was almost unchanged (644 in 2024).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 47.9% of the applications lodged in Nigeria that year, from 27.2% at the consulates of Switzerland to 66.1% at those of Bulgaria. Hungary’s consulates worldwide refused 13.0%. Hungary was the 13th most applied-for Schengen state in Nigeria.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Nigeria, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
