Spain: visa decisions in New Zealand
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 147 | 194 | 19 | 8.9% | 7.2% |
| 2024 | 196 | 257 | 4 | 1.5% | 4.3% |
| 2025 | 208 | 291 | 7 | 2.3% | 3.4% |
In 2025, Spain’s embassy and consulates in New Zealand (Wellington) received 208 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 291. 2.3% of applications were refused. In 2024 the rate was much the same, 1.5%. Applications rose by 6% compared with 2024 (196).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 4.6% of the applications lodged in New Zealand that year, from 0.5% at the consulates of France to 9.0% at those of the Netherlands. Spain’s consulates worldwide refused 14.6%. Spain was the 5th most applied-for Schengen state in New Zealand.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in New Zealand, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
