Italy: visa decisions in Mozambique

YearApplicationsVisas issuedRefusedRefusal rateMultiple-entry share
2023 1,3231,2041168.8% 17.2%
2024 1,9151,67224312.7% 28.5%
2025 2,0571,65640119.5% 61.1%

In 2025, Italy’s embassy and consulates in Mozambique (Maputo) received 2,057 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 1,656. 19.5% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 12.7%: the rate rose by 6.8 points, a sharp increase. Applications rose by 7% compared with 2024 (1,915).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 14.0% of the applications lodged in Mozambique that year, from 5.9% at the consulates of Spain to 20.4% at those of the Netherlands. Italy’s consulates worldwide refused 10.8%. Italy was the 2nd most applied-for Schengen state in Mozambique.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Mozambique, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
