In 2025, Austria’s embassy and consulates in Mexico (Mexico City) received 60 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 53. 1.9% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 0.0%: the rate rose by 1.9 points. Applications rose by 22% compared with 2024 (49).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 5.5% of the applications lodged in Mexico that year, from 3.3% at the consulates of Spain to 9.8% at those of France. Austria’s consulates worldwide refused 11.9%. Austria was the 8th most applied-for Schengen state in Mexico.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Mexico, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
