2024 (part of the year) 55943510318.6% 8.5%
2025 78951127735.2% 8.4%

In 2025, Romania’s embassy and consulates in Kenya (Nairobi) received 789 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 511. The refusal rate was 35.2%. The refusal rate rose by 16.6 points from 18.6% in 2024, a sharp increase. Applications rose by 41% compared with 2024 (559).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 33.1% of the applications lodged in Kenya that year, from 16.7% at the consulates of the Czech Republic to 60.9% at those of Norway. Romania’s consulates worldwide refused 11.5%. Romania was the 15th most applied-for Schengen state in Kenya.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. Romania only began issuing Schengen visas on 31 March 2024, so its 2024 figures cover part of the year. The figures cover applications lodged in Kenya, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
