Malta: visa decisions in India
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 3,888 | 1,776 | 1,978 | 52.7% | 33.1% |
| 2024 | 4,203 | 2,022 | 1,645 | 44.9% | 51.5% |
| 2025 | 8,587 | 5,755 | 2,720 | 32.1% | 23.3% |
In 2025, Malta’s embassy and consulates in India (New Delhi) received 8,587 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 5,755. 32.1% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 44.9%: the rate fell by 12.8 points, a clear improvement for applicants. Applications rose by 104% compared with 2024 (4,203).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 15.8% of the applications lodged in India that year, from 7.1% at the consulates of Denmark to 46.5% at those of Slovenia. Malta’s consulates worldwide refused 38.4%. Malta was the 19th most applied-for Schengen state in India.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in India, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
