| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 1,874 | 1,852 | 22 | 1.2% | 79.6% |
| 2024 | 2,456 | 2,415 | 41 | 1.7% | 90.0% |
| 2025 | 2,901 | 2,848 | 53 | 1.8% | 95.0% |
In 2025, Italy’s embassy and consulates in Hong Kong (Hong Kong) received 2,901 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 2,848. 1.8% of applications were refused. In 2024 the rate was much the same, 1.7%. Applications rose by 18% compared with 2024 (2,456).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 2.8% of the applications lodged in Hong Kong that year, from 0.4% at the consulates of Spain to 11.6% at those of Austria. Italy’s consulates worldwide refused 10.8%. Italy was the 2nd most applied-for Schengen state in Hong Kong.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Hong Kong, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
