YearApplicationsVisas issuedRefusedRefusal rateMultiple-entry share
2023 2,2081,23097844.3% 68.0%
2024 2,5221,1871,32952.7% 62.8%
2025 2,7541,5911,16342.2% 60.8%

In 2025, Italy’s embassy and consulates in Ghana (Accra) received 2,754 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 1,591. 42.2% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 52.7%: the rate fell by 10.5 points, a clear improvement for applicants. Applications rose by 9% compared with 2024 (2,522).

For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 46.5% of the applications lodged in Ghana that year, from 33.5% at the consulates of Germany to 71.9% at those of the Czech Republic. Italy’s consulates worldwide refused 10.8%. Italy was the 8th most applied-for Schengen state in Ghana.

You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in Ghana, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
