Netherlands: visa decisions in China
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 50,983 | 49,477 | 1,085 | 2.1% | 73.7% |
| 2024 | 72,595 | 70,203 | 1,764 | 2.5% | 58.7% |
| 2025 | 70,361 | 67,522 | 2,688 | 3.8% | 59.9% |
In 2025, the Netherlands’ embassy and consulates in China (Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou) received 70,361 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 67,522. The refusal rate was 3.8%. That is barely different from 2024 (2.5%). Applications fell by 3% compared with 2024 (72,595).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 4.0% of the applications lodged in China that year, from 1.3% at the consulates of Luxembourg to 19.3% at those of Malta. the Netherlands’ consulates worldwide refused 17.7%. The Netherlands was the 6th most applied-for Schengen state in China.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in China, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
