Malta: visa decisions in China
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 3,978 | 3,316 | 460 | 12.2% | 21.3% |
| 2024 | 4,547 | 3,120 | 1,183 | 27.5% | 4.4% |
| 2025 | 3,060 | 2,463 | 589 | 19.3% | 10.4% |
In 2025, Malta’s embassy and consulates in China (Beijing and Shanghai) received 3,060 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 2,463. 19.3% of applications were refused. In 2024 it had been 27.5%: the rate fell by 8.2 points, a clear improvement for applicants. Applications fell by 33% compared with 2024 (4,547).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 4.0% of the applications lodged in China that year. Malta’s consulates worldwide refused 38.4%. Malta was the 21st most applied-for Schengen state in China.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in China, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
